A Willing Instrument

Marcel Zeltzki is a professor of literature, a devoted father, and a man who helped bring down two planes over New York City. He will explain, at length and with considerable intelligence, why he is not responsible. He is partly right.

This is a confession that isn't quite a confession — from a man who helped build something monstrous, who tells himself he was peripheral, who engineers a death and calls it justice. He ends up in a Norman cottage with his family and his conscience more or less intact. Or so he claims.

Was he complicit, was he an instrument, was he something worse than either? The novel never says. The reader is left to decide what Marcel will not.
